01. Neodymium Magnets Introduction

Neodymium (NdFeB, Neodymium-Iron-Boron) magnets are used most widely for industrial application and in our daily lives because of its superior magnetic properties. The outstanding characteristics are as following.

  • Higher unit magnetic properties than other magnet and assure you of smaller size and lighter weight in designing devices.
  • Being mostly an iron based alloy. Neodymium magnets are much more prone to surface oxidation or rust among the rare earth magnets. To eliminate such a problem, the user should consider magnet coating, plating, or suitable surface treatment.
  • Being less prone to chipping during handing
  • Lower temperature coefficient of magnetic properties than ceramic but higher than SmCo type rare earth magnet. Therefore, this NdFeB type rare earth magnet will suffer irreversible loss at high temperature.

NdFeB magnets are anisotropic sintered magnets. Neodymium-Iron-Boron alloy is made into fine powder and then pressed in a magnetic field to obtain a preferred magnetization direction (making it anisotropic in performance). Then the pressed working piece is heat treated in a sintering furnace before machining and magnetism inspection.

Neodymium magnets are the third generation of rare earth permanent magnet and called ‘Magnet King’, which are used in a wide range of industries including computer, automobile, electric machinary, electro-sound devices, automatic control, magnetic force mechanism, microwave commnication, petrochemical industry, medical apparatus and equipment. The magnets are the ideal material for the subminiature magnetic devices with high performance, especially suitable for the products require high quality, small volume and light weight. Remarks:
1. The SST results differ from coating. In general, Salt Spray Test result for the magnets with barrel plating (normally for small size of magnets), is better than the ones with rack plating (normally for big size of magnets).
2. Salt Spray Test (SST) condition: 5% NaCl, 35°C, continuously spray a certain time, test whether there is corrosion on plating/coating surface.
3. Pressure Cooking Test (PCT) condition: 2 atm, 95% RH (Relative Humidity), 121°C to test the plating/coating adhesion. (Zinc, Passivated, Phosphated, and Epoxy not suitable for PCT).
4. Other test methods for plating/coating: Drop Test, Cross Cut Test, Heating and Spilling Test, Constant Temperature, Humidity Test, etc.
